Introduction

A pioneer congregation as modern as tomorrow

Congregation Sherith Israel (“remnant of Israel”) was born during the fervor of California’s Gold Rush. Today we are a Reform congregation known for balancing tradition and innovation.

We celebrate the diversity of our Judaism. We were born into Reform, Conservative and Orthodox homes. We have also chosen Judaism. We hale from around the world — Israel, Brazil, Iran, France, Mexico, South Africa and Russia — and around the country. Some of our families have belonged to Sherith Israel for generations. Many are first generation San Franciscans.

Our congregants are high-touch and high-tech. We are architects and engineers, doctors and lawyers, scientists and artists, teachers and social workers, chefs and writers. We produce video games, design software and stay home with our kids. We work at Google, Genentech, UCSF, San Francisco State, the California Supreme Court, and at schools, hospitals and restaurants.

We invite you to explore our website to learn more about our pioneering history, historic sanctuary, and our warm and approachable clergy. You'll find our Shabbat and holiday services under Worship and our social action programs under Community & Membership. Our Giving section describes ways to support the congregation, and you’ll find links to the greater Jewish community, including the Union for Reform Judaism, in our News & Events section.

This website was produced by our dedicated CSI web team and made possible by a generous gift from Janice and Lowell Sucherman.
