CONGREGATION SHERITH ISRAEL CLERGY
Cantor Emeritus, Martin Feldman was born into a very musical family in Newark, New Jersey. As a young boy he sang in Orthodox synagogue choirs.
Cantor Feldman attended Montclair State Teachers College and received a vocal scholarship from the David Manness School of Music in New York City. In 1958, he graduated from Hebrew Union College with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Sacred Music and received a certificate qualifying him to be a religious school principal.
After serving Congregation Beth Abraham in Tarrytown, New York, he became Cantor of Congregation Sherith Israel in 1960. He served as president of the Northern California Board of Cantors and has also served on the National Board of the American Conference of Cantors.
Cantor Feldman continues to participate in life cycle ceremonies and has enriched the musical life of this congregation and the San Francisco Jewish community immeasurably for the past 40 years. Cantor Feldman received an Honorary Doctorate in Music from Hebrew Union College in New York City in November of 1998.
