Introduction The Days of Awe: coming together for thanks and repentance The High Holy Days fill the sanctuary at Congregation Sherith Israel with a special energy and sense of reverence. We offer two styles of adult services, a variety of special High Holy Day worship experiences and services for children of different ages.We rejoice in sounding the shofar on Rosh Hashanah. The shofar's call wakes us up to the themes of the High Holy Days: t’shuvah, t’filah and tzedakah (repentance, prayer and righteous giving) to bring us closer to God, family and friends. Cantor Rita Glassman’s singing of Kol Nidre on Yom Kippur eve, an instrumental rendition of Kol Nidre by cello and harp, and the magical singing of our choir and guest soloists from the dome, high above the congregation, are all deeply moving parts of the High Holy Day experience that are treasured for many years. At the final Ne’ilah service on Yom Kippur, we celebrate the completion of the High Holy Days by bringing our own shofrim up to the bimah to join congregant Maurice Kamins, our shofar master. Then we gather as a community to break the fast. Of special note, the acoustics in our sanctuary are incredible since our dome was designed to amplify sound, the sound of the choir and our historic Murray Harris organ.
