Nosh ‘n Schmooze: 175th Anniversary Historical Panel

Thursday, January 15, 2026 26 Tevet 5786

12:30 PM - 2:00 PM

Congregation Sherith Israel is one of San Francisco’s original Jewish synagogues. With roots going back to Yom Kippur 1849, the congregation grew to become one of the City’s prominent Jewish institutions. Its current location, constructed in 1904, served as a courthouse after the 1906 earthquake and fire, as well as hosting a meeting for the founding of the United Nations. Prepare for an afternoon of Jewish San Franciscan history and some great stories and photos from Sherith Israel’s considerable past.

San Francisco historians Judi Leff and Joseph Amster will give a presentation on the synagogue’s considerable history. Judi and Joseph are both San Francisco History Association board members and presenters. Joseph is better known as Emperor Norton.

Lunch catered by Boichik Bagels. Sponsored by Monica Levin and Nancy Igdaloff. All are welcome. Free for members, $25 for non-members.  Advanced reservations required.
