How can we support refugees arriving in the Bay Area?

On February 2, over 40 people came to Sherith Israel to hear the moving and troubling story of a refugee from the country of Georgia. We were moved to act, and now we invite you to join us. Here's how:

1) Donate School Supplies: New arrivals with school-aged children need school supplies. We will collect your donations beginning now and running through the 22nd of May, to be delivered by Jewish Family & Community Services East Bay to refugees settling in the Bay Area. You can purchase supplies to donate in bulk, such as a box of notebooks or pens, or put together a complete backpack using this list:

Backpacks (for a variety of ages), lunch boxes (soft and foldable), markers, pencils, pencil sharpeners, pens, black and red sharpies, rulers, spiral notebooks, binders, tape, staplers, calculators, erasers, binder paper, scissors, glue sticks.

2) Hosting: JFCS-East Bay has a special program providing resettlement services in San Francisco to LGBT refugees who have fled their countries because of persecution based on gender identity and sexual orientation. These refugees need short-term housing to get a jumpstart on building a new life. They are able to pay some rent. If you have, or know of someone who has, an extra bedroom, with bathroom and kitchen access (separate kitchen not necessary), and would like to host a refugee for two months (or more if you choose), please contact Rabbi Saxe-Taller. Each refugee will have a case manager overseeing their resettlement logistics, as well as volunteers assisting them with other needs.

For further information, please contact Rabbi Saxe-Taller, 415.346.1720, x25, or or speak with congregants Bill Shore or Richard Rozen.
