Cantor David Frommer joins Sherith Israel clergy

Cantor David Frommer joined the Sherith Israel family on July 1. He comes to us from Congregation Shomrei Torah in Santa Rosa. Cantor Frommer grew up in Manhattan, then moved to Kentucky with his family where he graduated from high school. He earned his B.A. in history with honors from Yale University, where he sang with Magevet, Yale’s Jewish a capella group.

After college, Cantor Frommer served for 15 months in the Israel Defense Forces’ Nachal Infantry Division. During the next five years, he pursued his cantorial studies at Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion’s Debbie Friedman School of Sacred Music in New York. He also trained as a chaplain with the New York Army National Guard.

Following his investiture, Rabbi Frommer deployed overseas as the first cantor to serve as a chaplain in the US military. He provided religious support for Jewish soldiers and civilians in Afghanistan, Jordan, Kuwait and Qatar.

Cantor Frommer is married to Rabbi Carla Fenves, who serves at our nearby sister synagogue Congregation Emanu-El. They have three children: Aaron, 2-1/2, and twins Eliana and Talia, one.
