Introducing Sherith Israel's New Executive Director

Dear Sherith Israel Community,

I am thrilled to announce that the Sherith Israel Board of Trustees has hired Gordon Gladstone to become Sherith Israel’s next executive director.

Gordon will join us on December 11. Gordon brings to Sherith Israel a long and distinguished career within the Bay Area Jewish community, most recently as executive director at Congregation Shir Hadash in Los Gatos. He has served as the executive director of Berkeley Hillel and was the founding regional director of J Street for our northwest region.

Those familiar with Gordon and his work describe him as a person with a deep knowledge of and commitment to Judaism, a remarkable capacity to connect and communicate with diverse communities, and recognized leadership skills. Well respected by his peers, Gordon is president of the Bay Area Temple Administrators, the local chapter of the National Association of Temple Administrators. The search committee, members of the CSI board and other congregants met with Gordon on multiple occasions during the search process and found him to be incredibly warm and thoughtful. We are delighted to bring someone with Gordon’s many strengths to join our Sherith Israel team.

I am extremely grateful to Julie Lekach House, who so ably chaired and guided our search committee, along with committee members Warren Braunig, Dan Dohan, Jerry Hurwitz, Valerie Jahan, Nancy Sheftel-Gomes and Karen Zelmar.

I also want to express my heartfelt thanks to Nancy Sheftel-Gomes, who has done a tremendous job as our congregation’s interim executive director for the past year and a half, while continuing in her role of education director.  Among her many other accomplishments during this period, Nancy reorganized our staff and built a strong team that will provide a solid foundation for Gordon’s success. Nancy has worked tirelessly and has always put the interest of our congregation first, often at great personal sacrifice. We all owe Nancy a tremendous debt of gratitude for all she has done for our congregation over decades of service, and in particular during her tenure as interim executive director.

Please watch Under the Dome for future announcements about opportunities to welcome Gordon to our community.

Shalom,
Craig Etlin, President
