Climate Justice: An Evening of Learning, Community & Action
Thursday, June 13, 2024 • 7 Sivan 5784
6:30 PM - 8:00 PMEvent Rescheduled from May 8.
Rabbi George Altshuler will lead a Jewish text study about climate justice and hope. Then hear about opportunities to get involved in activism, and join in a discussion on next steps. In Person.
Actions:
1) RAC-CA/Dayenu campaign, which will be on the November election ballot, to Keep the oil setback legislation that was signed into law in California in 2022. Helaine Weinstein and Bill Shore --RAC-CA campaign leadership team.
2) CAT focus/strategy --moving forward: Carol Kingsley and Nancy Sheftel-Gomes, co-chairs, CAT.
*SB 1137, signed into law in 2022, would create 3,200ft buffer zones between new and existing oil and gas drilling and homes, schools, hospitals, and community centers – a policy solution rooted in decades of community advocacy. Almost immediately, fossil fuel companies tried to undermine our community’s win by pouring tens of billions of dollars into a campaign to repeal this critical safeguard. We must vote to KEEP THE LAW this November.

Although the ancient archetypal labyrinth is generally associated with churches and cathedrals, there is no reason it cannot be used for Jewish ritual as well. Only a few blocks from Sherith Israel, the nation’s first labyrinth at a medical facility awaits us. We will gather at CPMC Pacific Heights Outpatient Center (2333 Buchanan Street and Clay Street) at the outdoor labyrinth. After a brief introduction we will have the opportunity for a group walk on the labyrinth. Labyrinths provide an opportunity for contemplative meditation. The quiet, circular movement is a wonderful way to remember and honor those we have lost. Facilitated by Susan Borkin, an advanced labyrinth facilitator and trainer and Rabbi Graf.
