Have we got a shul for you!

If you seek spirituality in your life, you’ll find it at Congregation Sherith Israel. We offer support and inspiration through worship, music and tradition.

If you seek knowledge, you’ll find it here. We provide educational opportunities for families and individuals, adults and children that make Judaism more meaningful.

If you seek friendship, you’ll find it here. We encourage people to make deeper connections with each other, with our clergy and with themselves.

If you are a seeker, an interfaith family, a member of the LGBTQ community, or need special assistance, you’ll receive a warm welcome at Sherith Israel. We are proud that interfaith families and people of diverse ages, sexual orientation, ethnicity, interests and backgrounds find a comfortable spiritual home at Sherith Israel.

If you are interested in joining our spirited San Francisco community, we welcome you. Simply download our membership materials and return them to Nancy Sheftel-Gomes, our Interim Executive Director. Questions? Please feel free to email Nancy so she can assist you.

Membership commitment

All members are asked to support our community as is feasible.  People can do this by attending programs and services, joining committees, participating in volunteer services, and representing our congregation positively in the community.

Congregation Sherith Israel is supported almost entirely by contributions from our members. To sustain our community, we have established expectations for annual basic membership contributions:

- Household of one person under the age of 36 - $1,000

- Household of more than one person in which the oldest member is under 36 - $1,500

- Household of one person 36 and older -$1,800

- Household of more than one person in which the oldest member is 36 or older -$2,500

We understand that some members cannot contribute at that level and others are able to give significantly more.  We encourage all potential members to discuss their contribution with our Executive Director.  Everyone is welcome regardless of financial resources.

High Holiday services

Your membership includes tickets for the High Holy Days. We ask that you pay your pledge in full by August each year to help us process your High Holy Day ticket order.

Synagogue Preservation Fund

In addition to your membership pledge, we ask new members to make a multi-year pledge to our preservation fund. This endowment fund supports the upkeep and maintenance of our historic sanctuary building.

Annual Fund

We ask all congregants to participate in our Annual Fund, which supplements our membership commitment to support all of our programming and services.

Everyone is welcome regardless of financial resources

Our executive director will work with you confidentially to determine a comfortable financial commitment for your household. Everyone is welcome.

Membership commitments, synagogue preservation payments and Annual Fund contributions are all fully tax deductible to the extent allowed by law.
