Eight Nights: A staged reading to benefit HIAS
Saturday, October 12, 2019 • 13 Tishrei 5780
7:30 PM - 10:00 PMNewman HallEIGHT NIGHTS, a new play by Jennifer Maisel, tells the story of Rebecca, a young Holocaust survivor and refugee, who is finally free to start anew in the United States, but must confront the past that haunts her.
The play spans eight decades of Rebecca’s life and touches upon not only the story of Holocaust survivors, but also the global refugee experience. It acknowledges the trauma mirrored in the African-American community, with interned Japanese citizens and the current Syrian crisis, gracefully weaving together heart-aching moments with dark yet life-affirming humor.
If you give voice to the darkness, can you move into the light? Or is history always doomed to repeat itself?
8 Nights of EIGHT NIGHTS is a series of staged readings on 8 different nights in 8 different cities, to raise funds and awareness for HIAS and to stand with all those who are persecuted on the basis of race or religion.
NIGHT 6 of a National Fundraiser for HIAS will be directed by Ariella Wolfe and presented at Sherith Israel. Panel Discussion to follow immediately after the reading.
Panelist will include, Playwright Jennifer Maisel; Joe Goldman, HIAS regional representative; Avi Rose, Executive Director of JCFS East Bay; and Rabbi Julie Saxe-Taller of the Religious Action Center as moderator.
