People 65 and older come to this monthly gathering featuring lunch and interesting guest speakers.

Guest speaker Shawn Lichaa will discuss Karaite Judaism. Karaite Jews derive their laws from the Tanakh, and do not accept post-biblical works, such as the Talmud, as authoritative. Karaite Judaism is the longest lasting and most successful of the non-Rabbinic Jewish movements. There are an estimated 30,000-50,000 Karaite Jews in the world, and the only active Karaite synagogue in North America, B'nei Israel, is Daly City, CA. Using the example of Tefillin & Mezuzot, Shawn will explain how Karaite Jews approach biblical texts. Shawn Joe Lichaa is the founder of The Karaite Press (a project of the Karaite Jews of America), the co-author of As it is Written: A Brief Case for Karaism, and he runs the blog A Blue Thread: A Jewish Blog with a Thread of Karaite Throughout. Shawn has been a Jewish educator at a Conservative synagogue, and has spoken about Karaite Judaism to the Library of Congress, the Association of Jewish Libraries, and many synagogues.
