Refugee Shabbat
Friday, February 28, 2025 • 30 Sh'vat 5785
6:00 PM - 7:00 PMHIAS has been helping refugees for more than 100 years. In partnership with the Jewish community and other faith communities, we do all we can to fulfill the Torah's commandment, and the American tradition, of 'welcoming the stranger.”
On this seventh HIAS Annual Refugee Shabbat, it is more urgent than ever to affirm our support for refugees, and to reaffirm Sherith Israel as a Sanctuary Congregation since 2018.
Our guest speaker is Adoubou Traore, founder and Executive Director of the African Advocacy Network in San Francisco. The award-winning AAN supports low-income African and Afro-Caribbean immigrants, refugees, and asylum seekers. The African Advocacy Network provides life-changing immigration legal services, language justice support, and culturally responsive community education to help overcome systemic barriers such as anti-Blackness and xenophobia.
Mr. Traore will tell inspiring stories of the collective effort to develop from scratch AAN as a thriving immigrant support and racial justice organization.
