SF History Association: America’s First Suffrage March
Tuesday, January 29, 2019 • 23 Sh'vat 5779
7:00 PM - 9:00 PMThe Glen Park Neighborhoods History Project Presents: "Raise Your Gladsome Voices! America’s First Suffrage March & the Glen Park Women Behind It."
The San Francisco Call reported in 1910 that San Francisco’s Glen Park had more women's improvement clubs than anywhere else in the city. Beginning with the founding of the Glen Park Outdoor Art League in February 1908, Glen Park women soon became impassioned suffragists, working to gain rights for access to city utilities and endeavoring to beautify and transform their new residential district. In August 1908 as part of these efforts, they dared to help organize and lead the first march for suffrage in the United States, an event that is not well documented in U.S. suffrage history.
In this blend of presentation and dramatic performance, the history of suffrage activism in Glen Park and San Francisco will be featured, including the key history-making role played by Glen Park resident Johanna Pinther. The presentation will be given by Glen Park Neighborhoods History Project director and founder Evelyn Rose; the dramatic vignette that will follow is written and directed by GPNHP assistant project director Amy O'Hair; dramatic performances by Valerie Fachman and Haley Roth-Brown.
Doors open at 7 p.m. with refreshments and a historical book sale; presentation begins at 7:30 p.m. sharp. There is a $10 admission for nonmembers.

Our teens have the unique opportunity for dining & dialogue with our Rabbis. These dinners provide a deeper connection with our Rabbis and a chance to explore Judaism’s perspective on topics that interest them. Last year, “relationships” emerged as their theme; courage when dealing with moral problems that teens face, loneliness, navigating friendships, and asking for forgiveness in relationships were just a few things they discussed. Friday night Teens @ Studio dinners are from 6:00-8:30 pm, immediately following our community Kabbalat Shabbat service. -
