Social Action Committee Yom Kippur Program
Monday, September 25, 2023 • 10 Tishrei 5784
1:00 PM - 2:00 PMCongregation Sherith Israel has a long and proud history of working on many social justice issues, including immigrant support, voting rights, climate change, literacy access, and food insecurity.
One of our longest and most meaningful projects has involved feeding unhoused families. Every Sunday, for almost 30 years, many of our congregants have lovingly shopped for, prepared, and delivered nutritious meals to the Compass Family Shelter in the Tenderloin.
Please join the Social Action Committee on Yom Kippur, September 25th, as we welcome the shelter’s Executive Director, Erica Kisch, who will speak about our ongoing partnership and the urgent needs of unhoused people as they move toward independence and a home to call their own.
Erica Kisch became Chief Executive Officer of Compass Family Services in 2002, where she is responsible for the overall functioning of the organization and for ensuring that the organization’s strategic and financial goals are met. Prior to moving into that role, she managed Compass’ shelter program (then Compass Family Center) for eight years, before which she provided clinical services to homeless and at-risk youth in a number of settings. She holds an MSW from UC Berkeley and has been a Licensed Clinical Social Worker since 1993.
Sorry, Registration has ended.

We welcome (back) to Congregation Sherith Israel, Ilana Kaufman, CEO of the Jews of Color Initiative (JoCI). Hear the story of the founding of JoCI, including why it is a vital part of today’s Jewish ecosystem. Kaufman will also discuss key learnings from JoCI’s two major research studies, Counting Inconsistencies, a population study estimating 12-15% of American Jews are Jews of Color, and Beyond the Count, the largest study of Jews of Color in the US that provides an unprecedented view of JoC identities and lived experiences. The program will conclude with an engaging discussion about what's next on the horizon for this field and how to join together to collectively create change. BIO: Ilana (she/her) is the Chief Executive Officer of the Jews of Color Initiative. Her work sits at the center of Jewish community, racial equity, and justice, is anchored by the voices and experience of Jews of Color, and is focused on grantmaking, research and field building, and community education. As a guest on NPR’s All Things Considered and Code Switch, with pieces featured in eJewish Philanthropy and The Foundation Review, and an Eli Talk titled Who Counts, Race and the Jewish Future with over 45,000 views, Ilana is passionate about all things at the intersection of Jewish community, racial justice, Jews of Color, education, and philanthropy. Ilana was previously the Public Affairs and Civic Engagement Director, East Bay for the San Francisco, Bay Area Jewish Community Relations Council. A Senior Schusterman Fellow who is always searching Jewish text for discussion of equity and justice, Ilana received her B.A. in Sociology from California State University-Humboldt and her M.A. in Educational Pedagogy from Mills College. -
