Nancy Sheftel-Gomes, Education Director

On Tuesday afternoons and Sunday mornings you can see Nancy Sheftel-Gomes overseeing her domain. She checks on preschool classes, makes sure pizza is ordered for high-school lunch, welcomes adult students to Hebrew classes and encourages students and parents to enter the sanctuary for T’filah. She clearly loves her job.

Nancy manages all our religious education and youth endeavors from early childhood education programs—ranging from informal playgroups and preschool through high school. She also facilitates student preparation for b’nai mitzvah, curriculum planning and staff development.

Passionate about repairing the world and teaching Judaism through action, Nancy coordinates our twice-a-year Mitzvah Days. Also a congregant and volunteer, she co-directs and supervises HaMotzi and Chicken Soupers, our programs that feed the homeless and infirm. She also represents the CSI staff on the board and joint management group of our Hills of Eternity cemetery.

Nancy’s own Jewish education began as a child in Worcester, Massachusetts. In 1986, she joined the CSI education team as a part-time teacher while she worked in retail and industrial sales. Nancy, who has always mixed her work with community service, has been a member of the Interfaith Council for 20 years and a Chevrah Torah (Torah Study) participant at Sherith Israel for more than 25 years.

Why Nancy loves working at CSI:

“I’m very attached to Jewish ritual and practice, love to study Torah, and love teaching and studying in community at Sherith Israel.”
