This magnificent synagogue, as you know, built in 1905, miraculously survived the Earthquake and Fire only one year later. If it had been built just a few blocks to the east, across Van Ness, it most likely would have come down because almost the entire eastern half of the city was devas-tated, including Congregation Emanu-El’s the majestic cathedral synagogue at 450 Sutter Street, which was totally destroyed....Read more...

New roof, new matching gift, new photos

After taking some time off, the seismic retrofit project blog is back, and the news is all good. The project remains on schedule and budget, with the bulk of the work being completed by February. Waterproofing the dome is underway, which will be followed by installing a new roof—all measures to further protect our beautiful building from the elements. A beast in the rabbi’s office?

The "beast" is the Klemm 702, a 5,000-pound rig brought in to drill holes to place micropiles in the basement to strengthen the foundation. Our basement and other hidden spaces are filled with construction workers making our building safer. Other week #16 work includes the start of ADA accessibility upgrades. The project remains on schedule and on budget.
