In Focus: Israel/Gaza with Standing Together
Tuesday, March 12, 2024 • 2 Adar II 5784
7:00 PM - 8:30 PMCongregation Sherith Israel, 2266 California St., San FranciscoPlease join us to meet two inspiring Israeli grassroots activists (recently profiled in the New York Times) - Sally Abed and Alon-Lee Green, from NIF grantee Omdim Beyachad/Naqaf Ma'an (Standing Together). Hosted by Rabbi Jessica Zimmerman Graf and Rabbi George Altshuler.
Presented by New Israel Fund and cosponsored by Congregations Sha’ar Zahav, Emanu-El and Beth Sholom, the Kitchen and JCCSF.
As the largest Jewish-Arab grassroots movement in Israel, Standing Together has become an essential voice during this difficult moment in Israeli history. Sally and Alon-Lee will share personal stories about the work they have done and the support system they have created through their thousands of members to maintain a group of dedicated Jews and Arabs who are devoted to creating a society capable of achieving peace, equality, and social justice for all.
At a time when hope feels hard to come by, their work for a better future is a true inspiration.
Alon-Lee Green is the Co-National Director and a founder of Standing Together. He got his start organizing waiters in a chain of coffee shops and went on to found Israel’s first National Waiters Union. Alon-Lee emerged as a prominent leader of Israel’s social protest movement in the summer of 2011, and subsequently served as a political adviser in the Knesset, Israel’s parliament.
Sally Abed is a staff member and an elected national leader at Standing Together. In recent years, she has become a prominent progressive Palestinian voice in Israel. Sally is a recurring guest on the Promised Podcast and the Co-host of the new podcast Groundwork—a mini series co-sponsored by the New Israel Fund, about Palestinians and Jews refusing to accept the status quo and working together for change.
Standing Together is a grassroots movement predicated on the centrality of Arab-Jewish partnership. Their work involves mobilizing Jews and Palestinians from all over Israel in pursuit of peace, equality, social and climate justice. The members of Standing Together operate on the belief that Israelis of all backgrounds have far more in common than that which sets them apart. By standing together, they seek to fundamentally alter the existing socio-political reality toward a future with peace and independence for Israelis and Palestinians, full equality for all citizens, and true social, economic, and environmental justice.

Although the ancient archetypal labyrinth is generally associated with churches and cathedrals, there is no reason it cannot be used for Jewish ritual as well. Only a few blocks from Sherith Israel, the nation’s first labyrinth at a medical facility awaits us. We will gather at CPMC Pacific Heights Outpatient Center (2333 Buchanan Street and Clay Street) at the outdoor labyrinth. After a brief introduction we will have the opportunity for a group walk on the labyrinth. Labyrinths provide an opportunity for contemplative meditation. The quiet, circular movement is a wonderful way to remember and honor those we have lost. Facilitated by Susan Borkin, an advanced labyrinth facilitator and trainer and Rabbi Graf. -
