Arrington de Dionyso - Throat singing, bina box, bass clarinet, jaw harp, Sulawesi flute.
An uncompromising voice in contemporary music, Arrington de Dionyso integrates ancient soundmaking techniques with trans-modernist inquiries into the nature of spirituality and consciousness. His propulsive improvisations utilize voice and reeds (primarily bass clarinets and his invention the Bromiophone) as multiphonic tools in the navigation of liminal spaces between shamanic seance and rock and roll ecstasy.
While deeply rooted in the punk inclination to tear down musical standards in an effort for liberation, Arrington's music weds no-wave iconoclasm with the spiritual searching of Ayler era free jazz to reach towards an unveiling of primordially potent universalities. His compositions embrace sounds as colors, placing emphasis on the complimentary spectrums- from circular overtones whispered through bamboo flutes to the penetrating deep and guttural howls of amplified throatsinging- all with the lungs of an athlete.
Arrington is the vocalist, composer, and bandleader of the Olympia-based Old Time Relijun and the trance-punk "a la javanaise" ensemble Malaikat dan Singa, both groups draw heavy inspiration from the Zohar and other texts of ancient speculative mysticism. Arrington has toured extensively and maintains ongoing fruitful collaborations with musicians throughout Europe, North America, Israel, Japan, and Indonesia. No matter the continent, he seeks innovative approaches to improvisation both intuitive and indigenous.
Whether as a band leader or solo performer Arrington's music evokes an "Ancient Future", sometimes shocking and hallucinatory, always aiming to channel Spirit.
Bill Orcutt is an American guitarist and composer whose work combines elements of blues, punk, and free improvisation. Inspired by seeing Muddy Waters in The Last Waltz, Orcutt began playing the guitar as a teenager in Miami. In 1992, he formed the band Harry Pussy with his wife, Cuban/American drummer and vocalist Adris Hoyos. The group recorded three LPs and toured the US frequently, often in support of indie bands like Sonic Youth and Sebadoh. Orcutt moved to San Francisco and took a long hiatus from music, returning in 2009, with an LP of solo guitar entitled A New Way To Pay Old Debts which was well received, ranking third of 2009 in the Wire magazine's annual "Rewind" list. His follow-up release How The Thing Sings was similarly praised, reaching number 3 on NPR's The Best Outer Sound Albums Of 2011. Our teens have the unique opportunity for dining & dialogue with our Rabbis. These dinners provide a deeper connection with our Rabbis and a chance to explore Judaism’s perspective on topics that interest them. Last year, “relationships” emerged as their theme; courage when dealing with moral problems that teens face, loneliness, navigating friendships, and asking for forgiveness in relationships were just a few things they discussed. Friday night Teens @ Studio dinners are from 6:00-8:30 pm, immediately following our community Kabbalat Shabbat service. -
