Turkey and Syria were struck by a pair of devastating earthquakes on February 6 and numerous aftershocks, under very harsh winter conditions. The situation is far more horrific that the media has been portraying and we are only now beginning realize the scope and the aftermath. These earthquakes and their aftershocks affected at least 20 million and there are entire towns in the region where help is yet to arrive. The cities of Hatay (Antioch) and Malatya have been leveled their population of ~2 million have suddenly become homeless, mostly struggling to survive without any shelter.

In a discussion with Jarolim Gayri, founder of the bay area-based Solidarity and Fundraiser Group for the Survivors of the Earthquakes in Turkey and Syria. The bay area group has been responding to urgent needs by providing water, toilets, tents, container houses, and transporting clothes and medicine to the disaster zone. Their fundraising is directed toward a network of underrepresented groups of lawyers, architects and feminist organizations in Turkey.
