Professor Ron Robin, President of the University of Haifa assumed his role as the 11th president of the University of Haifa in October 2016. He is an Israeli scholar whose research focuses on the interface between culture and foreign policy. He graduated from the Hebrew University with a degree in History and Romance Languages, followed by a Ph.D in U.S. History from the University of California at Berkeley (1986).
Prof. Robin was a faculty member at the University of Haifa for over twenty years, during which time he held several leadership positions, including Dean of Students. In 2006, Prof. Robin joined New York University where, amongst other duties, he served as the Senior Vice Provost and was responsible for establishing two NYU international campuses in Abu Dhabi and Shanghai. He is the author of six books and dozens of articles. He has published research on the political, cultural and media aspects of the Cold War between the US and the former USSR, and about Politics and Culture in American academia. Under Prof. Robin’s leadership, the University of Haifa has become a “MULTIVERSITY”, focusing on global interdisciplinary research. Our strategic vision is derived from our unique ecosystem of Mountain- City- Sea. These three natural, intertwined laboratories provide a platform for investigating the gamut of challenges linking individuals, society, and environment in an era of disruption and instability. We are committed to addressing local challenges with a global impact, all in an atmosphere of diversity and tolerance.
Prof. Robin was born in 1951 in Tel Aviv to Shani (Rozin), a Jerusalem-born scion of the Shaltiel family, and to Eli, a South African citizen who served as a volunteer in the 1948 Arab–Israeli War. He grew up in South Africa and returned with his family to Israel when he was 13 years old. He joined the Israeli Defense Force in 1969. He served in the intelligence community and was discharged with the rank of major.
