Since 1980, SF-based nonprofit City Arts & Lectures has offered unique programs with leading figures in arts and ideas. Each year, there are more than 50 lectures and onstage conversations – and a few surprise performances, film tributes and concerts – with outstanding writers, critics, scientists, performing artists and cultural figures from around the world. City Arts & Lectures offers the broadest perspectives about ideas and values, the creative process and how we think about the world we live in.

Kate Goldstein-Breyer is Co-Executive Director of City Arts & Lectures. The daughter of founder Sydney Goldstein, who retired in 2017 and died in 2018, she, Holly and Allie all worked with her.

Guests through the years have included Truman Capote, Robin Williams, Yo-Yo Ma, Nora Ephron, Alec Baldwin, Bruce Springsteen, Tom Hanks and Nancy Pelosi. Originally located at the Herbst Theater, events are now held at the refurbished Nourse Auditorium—renamed The Sydney Goldstein Theater—at 275 Hayes Street, which offers nearly twice the seats as the Herbst.

In addition to the live theater audience, City Arts reaches listeners on 130 public radio stations across the country, and on the City Arts & Lectures podcast.
