7 pm: Jewish Dreams of Zion: How Three Jewish Thinkers Imagined a New Jewish Future

Rabbi Abraham Isaac Kook provocatively insisted that "the great dreams are the foundation of the world."  For him, as for many Zionist theorists, Zionism was about building a Jewish future radically different from the disappointing present they knew.  Yet Zionist thinkers often disagreed in profound ways about what that future should look like, so much so that it might make more sense to speak of "Zionisms" rather than "Zionism."  In this session, we'll meet three great Zionist thinkers and explore the dreams they held for the Jewish future in the Land of Israel: Nahman Syrkin and his vision of Labor Zionism, Ahad Ha-Am and his plan for cultural revival, and Abraham Isaac Kook and his dreams of a messianic age.
