Reform Judaism in Tel Aviv: A report from the front lines with Rabbi Azari

7:00 PM - 8:30 PMBart HallWe often envision Israel as a place of either secular or orthodox. Israeliness or a form of Judaism imported from eastern Europe of 100 years ago. But there is another story that happens away from the headlines and easy narratives. A growing cadre of Israelis are embracing progressive streams of Judaism, that reflects their values and builds community. Much like the Judaism we practice here at Sherith Israel. Come hear about this growing movement in the heart of Tel Aviv.
Mercaz Daniel is one of the largest Reform communities in Israel. Bringing many of the innovative practices of diaspora Judaism to the streets of the largest Jewish city in the world it has become a one-stop-shop; providing all religious services (ie. holiday/Shabbat, marriage, conversion, weddings, b'nai mitzvah), educational programming from infancy to seniors, and community programming - all under one roof.
Under Rabbi Meir Azari's leadership, Beit Daniel has grown into the Daniel Centers for Progressive Judaism with three Kehilot throughout Tel Aviv-Jaffa. In 2007, the Daniel Centers
opened Mishkenot Ruth Daniel in Jaffa, a guesthouse, cultural and seminar center that hosts 50,000 guests every year. Rabbi Azari was ordained by the Hebrew Union College, and received his B.A. in Jewish History and Political Science from Haifa University. Over the years, he has studied at Hebrew University, San Francisco University and the Graduate Jewish Theological Seminary in Berkeley, CA.

Irreverent, nostalgic and vulnerable, Until the Last Pickle, is a memoir replete with remembrances, anecdotes, and exactly 18 recipes. It’s an exploration of identity and belonging — at once, deeply personal and broadly relatable — told through the lens of one family’s “totally average” immigration journey.
