Congregation Emanu-El
The New Israel Fund in partnership with Congregation Emanu-El and Congregation Sherith Israel invite our communities to:
Shared Grief & Working for a Just and Peaceful Future
An Evening with New Israel Fund’s Daniel Sokatch
Please join us for a community gathering in shared grief and yearning for a peaceful future. The event will feature a conversation between Rabbi Jessica Zimmerman Graf, Rabbi Jonathan Singer, and Daniel Sokatch about Israel and the war in Gaza. There will be a special focus on the incredible work civil society is engaging in, with support from NIF, to help provide humanitarian aid to Israel’s most vulnerable, work to decrease inter-communal tensions, and provide mental health and trauma counseling. Hear about the kind of work that helps us see the holy in each other.
Daniel Sokatch has served as the CEO of the New Israel Fund since 2009. Before joining NIF, Daniel served as the Executive Director of the Jewish Community Federation of San Francisco, the Peninsula, Marin and Sonoma Counties. Prior to his tenure at the Federation, he was the founding Executive Director of the Progressive Jewish Alliance (now Bend the Arc). In recognition of his leadership, Daniel has been named four times to the Forward newspaper’s “Forward 50,” an annual list of the 50 leading Jewish decision-makers and opinion-shapers. He has contributed articles to leading newspapers and magazines, including The New York Times, The Washington Post, the Forward and Haaretz, and is the author of Can We Talk About Israel: A Guide for the Curious, Confused, and Conflicted (Bloomsbury, Fall 2021). Daniel holds an MA from the Fletcher School at Tufts University, a JD from Boston College Law School, and a BA from Brandeis University.
The New Israel Fund is the leading organization advancing and defending human rights and democracy in Israel. Widely credited with building Israeli progressive civil society, NIF has provided over $300 million to more than 900 organizations since its inception in 1979.

We welcome Ilana Kaufman, back to Sherith Israel, CEO of the Jews of Color Initiative (JoCI). Hear the story of the founding of JoCI, including why it is a vital part of today’s Jewish ecosystem. Kaufman will also discuss key learnings from JoCI’s two major research studies, Counting Inconsistencies, a population study estimating 12-15% of American Jews are Jews of Color, and Beyond the Count, the largest study of Jews of Color in the US that provides an unprecedented view of JoC identities and lived experiences. The program will conclude with an engaging discussion about what's next on the horizon for this field and how to join together to collectively create change.
Oneg sponsored by the Bloom family in honor of Micah's B. Mitzvah. Shabbat service streams on YouTube.
Ilana Kaufman (she/her) is the Chief Executive Officer of the Jews of Color Initiative. Her work sits at the center of Jewish community, racial equity, and justice, is anchored by the voices and experience of Jews of Color, and is focused on grantmaking, research and field building, and community education. As a guest on NPR’s All Things Considered and Code Switch, with pieces featured in eJewish Philanthropy and The Foundation Review, and an Eli Talk titled Who Counts, Race and the Jewish Future with over 45,000 views, Ilana is passionate about all things at the intersection of Jewish community, racial justice, Jews of Color, education, and philanthropy. Ilana was previously the Public Affairs and Civic Engagement Director, East Bay for the San Francisco, Bay Area Jewish Community Relations Council. A Senior Schusterman Fellow who is always searching Jewish text for discussion of equity and justice, Ilana received her B.A. in Sociology from California State University-Humboldt and her M.A. in Educational Pedagogy from Mills College.
All are welcome to attend 8 pm presentation either with or without dinner registration.
